๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Standard 3x3 speed cube
- โ Flat table or desk surface
- โ Desk lamp or balanced lighting
- โ Notepad for tracking algorithms
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ Cube lubricant (silicone-based, optional)
- โ Pre-printed algorithm reference sheet
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Maintain relaxed wrist posture to prevent repetitive strain during repeated algorithmic drills.
- โข Ensure cube tensions are balanced to prevent sharp internal springs or plastic edge pieces from popping out abruptly.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)
Identify Cube Pieces and Color Opposites
Hold your 3x3 cube and locate the three distinct piece types: stationary centers (1 color), edges (2 colors), and corners (3 colors). Observe the fixed color layout where white is opposite yellow, green is opposite blue, and red is opposite orange. Rotate individual layers to get comfortable identifying pieces by their color pairs rather than their current positions.
- โข Clear identification of 6 centers, 12 edges, and 8 corner pieces
- โข White center face held directly opposite the yellow center face
- โข Confusing edge pieces (2 stickers) with corner pieces (3 stickers)
- โข Assuming center pieces can move relative to one another
Build the Daisy Pattern on the Yellow Face
Hold the cube so the yellow center piece faces up toward the ceiling. Locate all four edge pieces containing white stickers and bring them onto the top yellow face surrounding the center, forming a white-and-yellow 'daisy'. If a white edge is stuck on the bottom or middle layer, twist that layer until an open slot is above it, then rotate the side face 90 degrees upward.
- โข Yellow center completely surrounded by 4 white edge petals
- โข Corner colors on the top face do not matter for this step
- โข Accidentally knocking out an already placed white petal while rotating in a new one
- โข Looking for corner pieces instead of edge pieces
Transfer Petals to Construct the True White Cross
Keep the yellow daisy facing upward and pick one white edge petal. Look at the second color on that edge piece, then rotate the bottom two layers together until that side color matches its identical center color. Once matched, rotate that specific side face 180 degrees (F2) so the white edge flips down onto the white face; repeat for all remaining three petals.
- โข Solid white cross on the bottom white face
- โข Side colors of each white cross edge align perfectly with red, green, orange, and blue centers
- โข Rotating edges down to the white face before matching the secondary color to its center
- โข Moving only the top face instead of turning the matching face 180 degrees
Master the 4-Move Right-Hand Algorithm
Place the white cross facing down on the table, keeping yellow on top throughout this drill. Practice the standard right-hand trigger: Turn the Right layer Up (R), Top layer Left with your right index finger (U), Right layer Down (R'), and Top layer Right with your left index finger (U'). Repeat this exact sequence six times until the cube returns to its starting state, developing fluid muscle memory.
- โข Smooth execution of R U R' U' in one fluid motion without pausing
- โข The cube returns to its exact original state after completing 6 repetitions
- โข Forgetting the final U' move (Top layer right) of the four-step sequence
- โข Turning the entire cube instead of rotating individual layers
Insert White Corners to Finish the First Layer
Locate a corner piece in the top layer containing a white sticker and identify its other two colors. Rotate the top layer until that corner sits directly above the slot between the matching color centers. Perform the 4-move right-hand algorithm (R U R' U') repeatedly (1 to 5 times) while keeping the target slot in the front-right position until the corner drops into place with white facing down. Repeat for all four corners.
- โข White face is completely solved on the bottom
- โข First layer forms a solid ring of matching colors with small 'T' shapes on each side face
- โข Inserting a corner with white facing down into the wrong colored slot
- โข Failing to re-orient the cube so the target slot stays in the front-right corner
