🧰 Required Tools & Equipment
- ✓ Smooth hardwood, tile, or laminate floor
- ✓ Full-length mirror or camera monitor
- ✓ Cotton socks or smooth-soled dance shoes
- ✓ Comfortable athletic pants
📦 Materials & Supplies
- ✓ Microfiber dry mop or floor cloth (for clearing debris)
⚠️ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- • Clear all rugs, cords, and furniture from at least a 10-foot linear path.
- • Wipe floor clean of grit or liquids to prevent unexpected sticking or slipping.
- • Warm up ankles, calves, and Achilles tendons with rotational stretches before sliding.
📋 Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)
Establish the Starting Stance
Stand tall with feet parallel, spaced about hip-width apart. Shift all your body weight onto your right leg and pop your right heel high onto the ball of your foot. Keep your left foot completely flat on the floor with zero weight applied to it.
- • Right heel elevated at least 3 inches off the ground on the metatarsal ball.
- • Left foot completely flush against the floor surface from toe to heel.
- • Torso centered directly above the popped right heel.
- • Splitting weight evenly between both feet.
- • Bending the torso forward instead of standing upright.
Slide the Flat Foot Backward
While holding your entire weight on the popped right foot, slide the flat left foot straight back across the floor. Keep the sole of the left foot perfectly parallel to the floor without lifting the heel or toes. Stop when the left toes pass roughly 6 to 12 inches behind your right heel.
- • Left foot moving straight backward while maintaining full sole contact with the ground.
- • Right heel remaining locked in its elevated position without dropping.
- • Left leg extended straight behind the right leg.
- • Pushing off the flat foot instead of the popped foot.
- • Curling or lifting the sliding foot's toes.
Execute the Snap Switch
Simultaneously drop your right heel firmly down to the floor while snapping your left heel up onto the ball of your foot. This weight transfer must happen in a single, crisp snap. All your body weight now shifts entirely onto the popped left foot.
- • Right foot instantly flat on the floor.
- • Left heel raised high with the ball of the foot pressed into the floor.
- • Hips and shoulders remain at a constant level without bobbing upward.
- • Lagging the heel drop after lifting the opposite heel.
- • Bouncing your head or torso upward during the switch.
Slide the Opposite Flat Foot Backward
With your weight securely on the popped left foot, slide your flat right foot straight backward along the floor. Keep the right sole fully in contact with the ground as it glides past the left foot. Stop when the right toes are 6 to 12 inches behind the left heel.
- • Right foot glides backward completely flat.
- • Left heel remains elevated on its ball bearing the body weight.
- • Body maintains a linear path backward without twisting.
- • Accidentally weighting the sliding right foot.
- • Allowing the sliding foot to drift outward diagonally.
Chain the Steps into a Continuous Glide
Repeat the snap switch and backward slide continuously, alternating feet to create a seamless glide. Maintain an even rhythm and keep your upper body, shoulders, and head completely level across multiple strides.
- • Rhythmic alternation: slide flat foot, snap switch, slide opposite flat foot.
- • Upper torso glides backward on a horizontal plane with zero vertical bounce.
- • Illusion shows legs walking forward while the body travels backward.
- • Rushing the tempo before the mechanics are clean.
- • Looking down at your feet, which disrupts body posture.
