📋 Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)
Chill the Metal Collection Surface
Place a metal spoon or small inverted metal tin into the freezer for at least 10 minutes. A cold thermal conductor is necessary to condense the vaporized phosphorus into an oily residue. Remove it only right before burning.
- • A frosted or cold metal spoon resting concave-side down on a flat, non-flammable surface.
- • Using a room-temperature or plastic surface.
Separate the Matchbox Striker Surface
Cut a striker strip off the side of a matchbox using scissors. Carefully peel away the thick cardboard backing from the thin abrasive surface, leaving only the thin brown chemically treated film.
- • A thin, paper-like dark brown strip separated from the thicker cardboard layer.
- • Leaving thick cardboard attached, which produces excess carbon soot instead of residue.
Burn the Striker Strip on Chilled Metal
Place the folded striker strip on the cold back of the metal spoon. Ignite one end with a lighter and allow it to burn completely down until the flame self-extinguishes.
- • The strip burns down into black ash, leaving an amber-brown oily sheen directly on the cold metal surface underneath.
- • Blowing out the flame before the strip has completely converted.
Clear Ash and Collect Oily Residue
Gently discard or blow away the dry black ash from the spoon. Touch your index finger and thumb directly into the amber-colored oily residue left on the metal to transfer a small smudge to your skin.
- • Dry black ash removed, revealing a distinct brownish-yellow sticky deposit transferred to the tips of the thumb and index finger.
- • Rubbing the black carbon ash onto fingers instead of the amber oil beneath.
Perform the Smoke Illusion and Wash Up
Gently rub your thumb and index finger pads together in small circular motions against a dark background or under directional light. Visible white wisps of smoke will rise as the phosphorus warms and vaporizes from friction. Immediately wash hands thoroughly with soap.
