How to Make a DIY Airbrush

📋 Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Modify the Reservoir Cap
Place the plastic bottle lid on your cutting mat and mark a center point using your marker. Use the tip of the utility knife to carefully bore a hole through the lid that matches the outer diameter of your straw. Ensure the hole is snug so the straw fits securely without excessive wobbling.
- • A clean, round hole through the center of the cap.
- • Straw can slide through with moderate friction.
- • Cutting the hole too wide, which causes the straw to tilt loosely.
Size and Insert the Vertical Pickup Tube
Insert one straw through the cap hole until the bottom sits approximately 2 to 3 mm above the bottom of the container. Cut the top of the straw so it extends roughly 10 to 15 mm above the top of the cap. Bevel the bottom tip slightly at a 45-degree angle to prevent it from suctioning flush against the container base.

- • Leaving the bottom cut flat against the container floor, blocking paint uptake.
Prepare the Air-Blast Nozzle Straw
Cut a 6-inch segment from the second drinking straw to serve as your blowing tube. Trim one end at a clean 90-degree square angle so the air jet exits in a tight, concentrated stream. Optionally, slightly pinch or taper the exit tip to increase air velocity as you blow.

- • Crushing the tip shut while cutting, restricting airflow entirely.
Align and Glue the Venturi Joint
Position the horizontal air straw so its opening sits perpendicular to and directly halfway over the open rim of the vertical straw. Blow gently across the top to confirm you hear a distinct whistling hiss, indicating negative pressure creation. Apply hot glue around the joint to lock the two straws permanently at this exact 90-degree alignment.

- • A solid bead of hot glue binds both straws firmly to the cap.
- • Gluing the air straw too high above the pickup tube, losing the vacuum effect.
Mix Thinned Paint in the Reservoir
Mix acrylic paint and water in your container in a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio until it reaches the consistency of skim milk. Thick paint will fail to draw up the straw, while properly thinned liquid atomizes instantly. Screw the cap assembly tightly onto the loaded container.

Test Spray and Fine-Tune
Hold the container upright roughly 6 inches away from scrap cardboard. Blow a sharp, steady breath into the horizontal straw to draw paint up the tube and produce a fine atomized spray cone. Adjust your blowing distance and breath pressure to vary between light shading and dense coverage.
