๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ 2H graphite pencil
- โ 2B graphite pencil
- โ Kneaded eraser
- โ Clear plastic ruler
- โ Blending stump
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ 9x12 inch sketchbook paper (70-80 lb)
- โ Drafting tape
- โ Aerosol workable fixative
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Maintain a relaxed grip and neutral wrist angle to avoid repetitive strain during prolonged sketching.
- โข Ensure adequate, non-glare task lighting to prevent eye strain when viewing subtle construction lines.
- โข Apply aerosol fixative only in an open, well-ventilated outdoor space away from open flames.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Establish the 8-Head Proportion Grid
Use a clear ruler and a 2H pencil to draw a straight vertical center line measuring 8 inches long on your paper. Mark off every 1-inch interval with a small horizontal dash, creating 8 equal stacked sections numbered 1 through 8 from top to bottom. Sketch an oval in section 1 to establish the head height, which serves as your measuring unit for the rest of the body.
- โข A vertical line divided into 8 equal units with an oval filling unit 1.
- โข Clear, evenly spaced horizontal tick marks along the central axis.
- โข Drawing the initial head oval too wide, which causes disproportionately wide body landmarks down the line.
- โข Pressing too hard with the pencil, leaving permanent grooves in the paper.
Block in the Torso and Pelvis Masses
Draw an oval or rounded trapezoid for the ribcage across units 2 and 3, angling it slightly to match your desired posture. Leave the lower half of unit 3 open for the waist and soft abdomen area. In unit 4, sketch a tapered bowl shape representing the pelvis, ensuring the bottom of the pelvis aligns with the bottom mark of unit 4.
- โข An upper egg-shaped cage in units 2-3 and an inverted bucket/bowl shape in unit 4.
- โข A distinct gap between the ribcage and pelvis representing the flexible waist.
- โข Connecting the ribcage directly to the pelvis with no space for the waist.
- โข Making the ribcage and pelvis the same width regardless of target figure build.
Place the Joint Spheres and Limb Skeletal Lines
Mark small circular spheres at the outer shoulder edges (top of unit 2), the hips (sides of unit 4), and the knees (bottom of unit 6). Draw straight directional lines connecting the hips to knees and extending down to ankles at the bottom of unit 7, with wedge-shaped feet filling unit 8. Sketch arm gesture lines extending from the shoulders, placing the elbows at unit 3 (navel level) and wrists at the crotch line (unit 4).
- โข Stick-and-joint armature showing the full arm and leg placement.
- โข Elbows aligned with the waistline and wrists aligned with the base of the pelvis.
- โข Placing the knees too high or too low relative to the unit 6 marker.
- โข Drawing arms too short, with elbows positioned above the ribcage base.
Add Volumetric Cylinders for Flesh and Muscle Mass
Wrap tapered cylinders around the limb stick-lines to build anatomical mass for the thighs, calves, bicep areas, and forearms. Keep the thigh cylinders wider near the hips and tapering toward the knee joint sphere. Draw the calf cylinders with a slight outward bulge on the upper half, narrowing smoothly toward the ankles.
- โข Three-dimensional mannequin appearance with cylindrical limb volumes.
- โข Visible taper from upper thigh to knee and from knee to ankle.
- โข Drawing perfectly straight, symmetrical cylinder walls instead of organic tapered curves.
- โข Making limb cylinders too thin, resulting in a fragile, ungrounded figure.
Draw Organic Contours and Anatomical Landmarks
Switch to a 2B pencil to lay down the final outer contour line, connecting the geometric forms into smooth, continuous curves. Define key anatomical landmarks including the collarbones at the base of unit 1, the curve of the chest muscles in unit 2, the navel in unit 3, and the kneecaps in unit 6. Vary line weight by making overlapping crease lines slightly thicker to create visual depth.
- โข Continuous, organic body silhouette covering the underlying structural boxes and cylinders.
- โข Clear landmark definition at clavicles, chest, waist, and knees.
- โข Tracing rigidly around every construction circle instead of flowing across joints.
- โข Using uniform, heavy line weight across the entire body, which flattens the drawing.
Erase Guidelines and Apply Core Shading
Gently dab and roll a kneaded eraser over the page to lift away the vertical measuring line, unit numbers, and internal construction spheres. Select a single light source direction and lightly cross-hatch shading beneath the chin, under the pectoral/chest muscles, along one side of the torso, and under the inner thighs. Smooth out transition zones using a blending stump to give the body rounded depth.
- โข Cleaned drawing free of grid lines and internal joint circles.
- โข Soft tonal gradients indicating light and shadow on the rounded limbs and torso.
- โข Scrubbing aggressively with the eraser and abrading the paper surface.
- โข Adding random shadows from multiple conflicting light directions.

Don’t have everything?
- No 2H or 2B drawing pencils? Standard HB (#2) pencil, using very light pressure for initial marks and heavier pressure for final contours
- No Kneaded eraser? Soft vinyl eraser or Blu-Tack/poster putty dabbed lightly onto the paper
- No Ruler? Straight edge of a book, index card, or marked edge of a scrap strip of paper
